The Open-Air Prison

This chronicle concerns a prison.
Not a prison of walls, bars and uniformed guards — though those existed in my era, and served their purpose. The prison I describe is far more sophisticated. It is a prison of perception. A prison of comfort. A prison of manufactured consent, engineered dependency, and the careful, patient, multigenerational construction of a reality so seamless that its inhabitants not only failed to recognise their captivity — they defended it.
The majority of the people who lived in my time did not know they were prisoners.
They went to work. They paid their debts. They watched their screens. They voted for candidates selected by interests they never examined. They consumed food they did not grow, medicine they did not understand, and information curated by systems they could not see. They called this freedom.
It was not freedom. It was management.
